When did horror films get so boring?  Perhaps remaking bad horror films from the Eighties isn’t the best way to revitalize the genre. But wait! The film could be made in 3-D, which would change…nothing.
One thing you have to admit about My Bloody Valentine is the amazing 3-D effects. Why, the mediocrity just jumps off the screen and into your popcorn. The story has something to do with a maniac miner escaped from an institution to terrorize a small community as he had a decade before. It is a singular pleasure to watch Darren Aronofsky’s new film, The Wrestler, starring Mickey Rourke. Rarely have I seen a movie that I found so totally engrossing without being the least bit interested in the subject matter itself. Wrestling? The silliest thing in show business? But the filmmakers find an unprecedented level of humanity in the tale of an aging wrestler at the end of his rope.

The Danny Boyle directed flick is shot entirely in India with a cast unknown in the West, and yet the buzz is so good it actually has the chance to win this year’s Oscar for Best Picture. And why not? Great storytelling, acting, and direction make this a must-see.
